Glucosamine, also known as glucosamine sulphate amongst other things is a compound found in the cartilage of your joints which helps to keep them friction free and more flexible. The compound itself is made from glucose and the amino acid glutamine and acts as a lubricant between joint bones (such as those found in the knee or the elbow.)

Without adequate ‘in joint’ lubrication, everyday movement would be extremely painful and uncomfortable as your bones would be rubbing directly against each other – which is going to strike a few nerve endings! By maintaining a healthy level of cartilage growth and repair in your body, you can reduce the impact on your joints and ensure better mobility in later life.

Where is glucosamine found?

Glucosamine supplements are usually made from the shells of crustaceans, these are often processed to extract the glucosamine content and formed into supplements. This would mean a vegetarian may be better off not taking such supplements. There are however vegetarian glucosamine equivalents, which may also be suitable for vegans.

Where can i get glucosamine supplements?

Glucosamine can be bought as a nutritional supplement from most health stores, which can be taken alongside your regular diet. The tablets are easy to swallow so for aching joints, it could be a simple way to improve the state of your cartilage. Fish oils also are thought to be highly beneficial for keeping joints more flexible and may be good to help reduce the effects of ailments like osteoarthritis. This is particularly true for arthritis of the knee!

Often prevention is better than cure, so understand the importance of healthy cartilage and dont exert too much strain on your joints at any one time. Things like excessive exercise can sometimes do more harm than good. Glucosamine is not a joint care supplement that can repair long term damage, so be good to your joints!
